C.Glass Dance Co Presents:

Exploring Iceland

Iceland (Icelandic: Ísland [ˈistlant] is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic, with a population of 348,580 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active.

The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence keep summers chilly, with most of the archipelago having a tundra climate.

According to the ancient manuscript Landnámabók, the settlement of Iceland began in 874 AD when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson became the first permanent settler on the island. In the following centuries, Norwegians, and to a lesser extent other Scandinavians, emigrated to Iceland, bringing with them thralls of Gaelic origin.

Fact:

The recorded history of Iceland began with the settlement by Viking explorers and their slaves from the east, particularly Norway and the British Isles, in the late ninth century. Iceland was still uninhabited long after the end.

Hvítserkur, otherwise known as the Troll of Northwest Iceland, is a 15 m (49 ft) tall basalt rock stack protruding from Húnaflói Bay. The rock is a nesting ground for seagulls, shag and fulmar, making it appear constantly in motion.

The Minds Behind The Magic

Ciara Glass

Director, Choreographer, Producer, Lead Dancer, and Costume Designer.

"My directing style is much more collaborative. Performances are always the best when you have multiple individuals sharing ideas and bringing it to life. When choreographing, I make it a priority to always make sure each individuals dance style and artistry shines through."

Rachel Gischia

Choreographer & Lead Dancer.

"I drew inspiration from Jack's magical expereince in Christmasland and put a funky Halloween twist on it. I wanted the dancers to have fun acting throughout the scene and the audience to notice the tension between Jack and the townspeople, all thw hile having a laugh or two."

Allison
Rice

Choreographer & Lead Dancer

"I wanted to captivate the feeling of sadness and rejection that Sally felt during the movie. I did moves that looked like I was being pushed around, and still tried to show strong movements even when the character was weak."

Bethany Love

Choreographer & Dancer.

"The inspiration that I pulled from is my goofy personality and the playfulness of Oogie Boogie. Yes, he, "Oogie" is king of scary at times, but he just wants to have fun. I wanted to bring the audiences attention to the different styles and vibes of the music. When you watch Sandy Claws and the Trick or Treaters, watch how playful and interactive they are. I want the audience to be engaged with th beat of the music and the dancers movement."

Valeriia Bevenzko-Green

Choreographer

"As a previous choreographer and dancer in last year's JACK performance, I wanted my choreo to demonstrate how my character would reinvent Christmas traditions through the "spooky" lens. I loved being a part of this creative process as Nightmare Before Christmas is a new story story for me. In Ukrain, I was not shown this movie and now it is a holiday favorite."

Twas the night before Wicked Christmas, and all through the night, the three trick or treaters set forth to kidnap Sandy Claws. They were successful and bring Sandy Claus to the devious and theatrical Oogie Boogie at his lair filled with bats.

Happy Hallo-Eve

03

Christmas Land is such a delight! Jack is dazzled by the cheer and holiday spirit, of dancing elves and Santa Claus himself! Jack is curious about everything and is fascinated with this new idea of Christmas and how drastically different it is from Halloween. Jack has found this missing peice of excitment that he has been searching for and must absolutely share with the citizens of Halloween Town! Jack returns to Halloween town and calls an instant town meeting.

Jack describes the wonders of Christmas, from the presents with bows to the stockings filled with candy and toys. The townspeople do not seem to understand so Jack adds a little wicked twist on the description of "Sandy Claws." With a little convincing, they all decide to take over Christmas with a perfectly wicked plan.

The Magic of Christmas

02

Jack Skellington, an elegantly attenuated skeleton, the king of Halloweentown, has just finished another frighteningly successful Halloween; just like has has done year...after year... after year. While receving much adoration from the Halloweentown’s folk, Jack seems not enthused. He seems quite empty, as if something is missing from his life. He craves excitement, something new. The missing something could be Sally, a living rag doll created from the evil scientist Dr. Spinklestein. Although, Sally is kept locked away and yearns for Jack from afar.

Jack, in his despair, seeks comfort by taking a walk through the woods. Along his walk, he stumbles upon a strange circle of trees, each door has a symbol that represents a specfic holiday. “What is this?” Jack asks with curiosity as he reaches for the door with the brightly lit pine tree. painted perfectly against the wooden door. Before he knows it, Jack is tumbling into Christmasland!

Halloween Town

01

Act 1

It is a beautiful night in Halloween town and everything is back as it should be but wait! The magic of Christmas is not over yet, as the first snowfall gently falls to the ghastly ground. On the horizon, on the hill, Jack and Sally share a tender moment, both realizing that what they have been missing, is each other.

A Christmas Miracle

06

After a long night of terrifing the populace and being blown out of the sky, Jack has realized something. He has made a mistake and has now set his heart on being the best pumpkin king he can be. Jack and Zero set forth to Halloweentown to find Sandy Claws and save him from Oogie Boogie’s lair. Maybe Christmas can be saved after all!

Rescue Sandy Claws

05

With Sandy Claws out of the way, the townspeople were hard at work making their wicked Christmas a reality.  Sally has made Jack an impressive Sandy Claws suit and Dr. Spinklesteins skeletal reindeer has come to life! The reindeer are hitched to sleigh full of creepy toys with Jack’s ghostly dog Zero leading the way. Sally is worried, and feels that this plan will not go well. That terror and mayhem are on the horizon. Will Jack pull of Christmas? More so, who will save Christmas.
